This week I was called out to a 2018 BMW X3 automatic after the owner noticed a strong shake through the brake pedal whenever she braked.
I began with a short test drive to confirm the problem, then lifted the vehicle to inspect the brakes, steering and suspension. On first glance, the brakes actually looked in good condition and weren’t very old at all.
After speaking with the customer, I learned the discs and pads had only been fitted around 18 months ago, and the car had covered just 3,000 miles since. Despite looking fairly new, the brakes had in fact developed the fault.
To fix the issue, I fitted Nappa Performance discs and pads from Apec Braking. These are high-quality components designed to handle tougher driving conditions, giving the customer better braking performance and helping prevent the same problem from returning.
After some more conversation, the root cause became clear. The customer lives at the top of a steep mile-long hill. In an automatic car, the brakes are doing all the work from cold every time the car sets off. That repeated strain had caused the discs to overheat and warp far earlier than normal.
Although this customer was based on the far side of Leeds—outside my usual York area—I was happy to travel for them, as they’ve been a loyal customer for many years.
This case was a good reminder that just because something looks new or serviceable, it doesn’t mean it isn’t the problem. Taking the time to confirm the fault properly and listening to the driver’s full description always helps in getting to the root of unusual issues.
Brake Care Tips for Drivers on Steep Hills
If you live somewhere hilly, here are a few ways to protect your brakes:
-
Use engine braking – In automatics, select a lower gear (“2” or “L”) when heading downhill to take pressure off the brakes.
-
Don’t ride the brakes – Brake firmly in short bursts rather than keeping constant light pressure, which can quickly build up heat.
-
Cool down when possible – After a long hill, give your brakes a short break before parking to reduce the chance of heat spots.
-
Invest in quality parts – Good discs and pads are more resistant to warping and will save you money in the long run.
